Maids Moreton WI - February 2010 Report

MAIDS MORETON WI

8 February 2010

A good many members attended this meeting. The weather has improved somewhat so we are getting back to normal!

Every month the group have a competition item for which the Jane Murray cup is awarded annually. This cup is in memory of Jane, a longstanding popular member who was an avid enthusiast of our competitions, always encouraging us all to join in. Her husband John came along, as in previous years, and presented the cup to this year’s winner, Ruth Sentance.

There are many events and walks coming up, a large number of them are detailed in the WI Buckinghamshire News. Anyone who does not have a copy, should beg or borrow one from a fellow or committee member. Do not miss out.

The Annual Council Meeting at the Civic Centre is on 13 April. Guest speakers include Edwina Currie

A number of eagle-eyed members noticed that our goldwork picture was not in its usual hanging place. It is on loan until next January to an exhibition at High Wycombe to celebrate Bucks WI 90 years in the county.

Our speaker, Steve Finders and his wife Lisa, gave us a very informative talk on Veterans Aid, which has a relief centre near Victoria Station in London. This wonderful charity helps homeless ex-servicemen, who for a wide variety of reasons have fallen on hard times and it tries to help them get their lives together again. Steve spoke of a number of different cases, all of them very humbling.

Next month, 10 March, our speaker will be Beryl Hulbert who will talk about BBONT and its nature reserves. The competition will be a bird picture.

Maids Moreton Hall - Update June 2009

A STATEMENT FROM FREMANTLE TRUST

18th June 2009

Maids Moreton Hall, Church Street, Maids Moreton

As freehold owners of the above recently vacated building and grounds we are writing to keep you informed of our actions to date and our intentions for the future of this site.

The Fremantle Trust, who for many years now have leased and operated the existing care home, successfully transferred the residents on the 15th and 16th June to our newly completed care home Carey Lodge in Church Street, Wing. Fremantle will be emptying the home of their remaining equipment over the following few weeks.

We have boarded up the building and erected a temporary hoarding to secure our premises as we are well aware of the rumour that there is a serious threat of the building being broken into and any architectural items of value being stripped out. To hopefully prevent this from happening we have carried out these and other security measures.

We would be extremely grateful if anyone does spot anything suspicious on site that they immediately contact the police and/or our Customer Contact Centre (0800 876 6060 or 01628 543101) which is open between 8am and 7pm Monday to Friday and converts to an emergency call out service at weekends and evenings.

We have employed a firm of tree surgeons to carry out some long overdue tree works on the site. There are approximately thirty trees that are the subject of a Tree Preservation Order and any works to these trees will be subject to the approval of Aylesbury Vale District Council. I can reassure you that it is certainly not our intention to include within these works the removal of any protected trees.

With regard to the future use of the site we are currently considering our options and hope to have very initial outline discussions with the planning and conservation officers from Aylesbury Vale District Council about what is and what is not possible on the site. Subject to the outcome of these meetings we will produce an initial feasibility study on which we will canvas local opinion either through a locally held presentation event or a presentation to a regular Parish Council Meeting or both.

Any proposals that we do bring forward will respect the three major issues surrounding the site i.e. its impending Conservation Area status, the TPO protected trees and the desire to see the retention of the old Maids Moreton Hall on the site. As with any proposals of this nature we can not put a definite timescale on when we will be in a position to consult locally; it could be a few months or it could be a year or more.
